This was a wonderful book concerning the era of the Civil War. Well written and giving some insight to the Times. It gives insight to those students of the junior high age group with appropriate subject matter and language. Nevertheless it is nice reading even for adults. It would be excellent additional reading for students for students while studying that period of our history.Product details

I liked the history. The dog could be a little more realistic, but overall, it is a good story. I will order book #2.
A great example of historical fiction. Good reading for young adults and old adults alike. Can't wait for the next installment!

My kids loved both Avery books.
A 14 yr old Avery from Virgina begins his journey as a boy. Through witnessing the atrocities of war first hand and staying true to his beliefs he is forced to become a man. The underlying theme of doing the right thing is sometimes the hardest thing of all to do is a great reminder for all. I especially enjoyed reading about the ingenuity used by people of that period. The main characters are well defined and at times I could see Gunner the dog in my minds eye running through the hospital encouraging the patients. This book is an enjoyable read for young and old. I can't wait for the next one!
